Most South Indian cities are within a straightforward train or bus journey of Tirupati. The town sits in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, roughly 140 km west of Chennai, about 260 km south of Bangalore, and around 550 km south of Hyderabad. One thing to understand from the start: the temple of Lord Venkateswara is not in Tirupati town — it is up on Tirumala hill, a roughly 19 km ghat-road drive above the town. So getting here is a two-step journey: reach Tirupati (this guide), then get up to Tirumala (see the Tirupati to Tirumala travel guide). This guide covers Step 1: getting to Tirupati town from wherever you are starting.
We are ONV Yatra — an independent assistance service, not affiliated with TTD. We never book travel or tickets for you; we help you plan and you book everything in your own name. By train: the most popular way for most pilgrims
Rail is the most reliable and popular way to reach Tirupati for most South Indian pilgrims, and the connectivity is genuinely good.
Two stations serve the area. Tirupati Railway Station (station code: TPTY) is the terminal station right in the heart of the town — trains originating from or terminating at Tirupati arrive here. Renigunta Junction (RU), about 10–12 km away, is a larger junction where many long-distance express trains stop before continuing onward; if your train doesn't go to 'Tirupati' but shows 'Renigunta', you are landing in the same area and can reach Tirupati town by auto-rickshaw, local bus or a short passenger train in about 15–20 minutes.
From Chennai: Chennai is one of the closest major cities. Multiple daily trains depart from Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore, with journey times of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Because demand is very high — especially on Friday evenings and around festivals — book as early as IRCTC allows, currently 60 days in advance. If confirmed berths are unavailable, the tatkal quota opens 24 hours before departure and is a sensible backup.
From Hyderabad: Secunderabad and Kacheguda stations in Hyderabad both have direct overnight trains to Tirupati, with journey times of roughly 9–12 hours. Overnight trains are popular — you board in the evening, sleep, and arrive in Tirupati in the early morning, ready for the day's pilgrimage. Book well in advance for popular travel dates.
From Bangalore: Several daily trains connect Bengaluru City (KSR) and Yeshwantpur stations to Tirupati, with journey times of roughly 5–7 hours. As with all Tirupati trains, berths fill fast for weekends and festival periods.
From Vijayawada: Multiple direct trains run between Vijayawada Junction and Tirupati/Renigunta, taking roughly 5–6 hours.
From other cities: Tirupati has reasonable rail links with Pune, Mumbai, major Andhra Pradesh cities (Nellore, Ongole, Guntur, Visakhapatnam) and Telangana. For any origin city, search the official IRCTC portal (irctc.co.in) for current trains, exact schedules and live fares — never rely on a fixed number from a third-party site, as timetables change.
By flight: Tirupati Airport (TIR)
Tirupati has its own airport (IATA code: TIR) located about 12–15 km from the city centre. Airlines including IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet have operated routes connecting Tirupati to Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai, though the schedule is modest and changes seasonally. From the airport, pre-paid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws connect you to the town.
Flights are worth checking if you are coming from a city without a convenient overnight train or if you want to save a long road/rail journey. Confirm current flights and fares on the airlines' own websites or through a booking aggregator — schedules change and some routes may run only on certain days.
For international devotees, the nearest major international airports with good domestic connections to Tirupati are Chennai (MAA) and Hyderabad (HYD). A common option is to fly to Chennai or Hyderabad and then take a connecting domestic flight or an overnight train to Tirupati.
By bus: APSRTC and private operators
Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) runs extensive express and sleeper-coach services to Tirupati from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Vijayawada, Nellore, Ongole and most major AP and Telangana cities. The Tirupati Central Bus Station (CBS) is close to the town centre and the railway station. APSRTC overnight sleeper coaches are popular because they are economical and let you sleep through the journey.
Private sleeper and semi-sleeper operators also run from Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad; these are bookable through the operators' websites or third-party bus aggregators. Fares and timings on all routes change seasonally, so confirm the current schedule on the APSRTC official website or at the bus counter before you travel.
One useful option for pilgrims travelling from within Andhra Pradesh or Telangana: APSRTC has run dedicated Devasthanam pilgrimage bus services on some routes that travel directly up to Tirumala (bypassing Tirupati town). Check the current availability and boarding points on the APSRTC portal, as these services change.
By car or private vehicle
Driving to Tirupati is very feasible from nearby cities. The main road approaches are via NH 716 from the Chennai direction and via state/national highways from Bangalore and Hyderabad. Tirupati town parking is manageable near the bus stand and station areas.
Note that once you reach Tirupati town, getting up to Tirumala requires taking the ghat road — a separate one-way pair of roads managed by TTD. Private vehicles pass through the Sapthagiri toll plaza on the way up where a toll applies. During peak festival periods TTD may restrict private-vehicle entry times or cap the number of vehicles. Always check the current ghat-road rules and toll-gate timings on the official TTD portal before planning a very early or late-night drive up — the ghat road closes for part of the night under normal conditions.
What to do first when you arrive in Tirupati
Tirupati town is the stepping-stone, not the destination. When you arrive — at the railway station, airport or bus stand — your next task depends on your darshan plan.
If you have a room booked on Tirumala hill: head to the Tirupati Bus Stand (a short auto-rickshaw or city-bus ride from the railway station), then board one of the frequent APSRTC buses up the ghat road to Tirumala. The journey takes about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic and the toll queue.
If you are staying in Tirupati town: check in, rest, and then go up to Tirumala at the right time for your darshan or seva slot. Factor in the 30–45 minute ghat-road journey when planning your timing — for a morning reporting slot, leave Tirupati well in advance.
If you plan to walk up via the footpaths (Alipiri or Srivari Mettu): free TTD buses from near the railway station run to the trailheads at Alipiri and Srivari Mettu. These are different from the paid APSRTC buses that drive all the way up — the free TTD buses only take you to the foot of the walking path. Confirm the current schedule and last-bus timing, especially if walking in the early morning.
One practical tip: carry a printed copy of your darshan ticket, seva confirmation or accommodation details from the moment you leave home — you may be asked to show it at various checkpoints before you even reach the temple.
