A Tirumala darshan goes much smoother when you arrive dressed right and carrying the correct documents. TTD follows a traditional dress code and a strict original-photo-ID rule, and the last thing any devotee wants is to be turned back at the entry point after travelling so far.
This guide walks you through what to wear, what ID and papers to carry, and what is not allowed inside the temple. We are an independent assistance service, not TTD, so we always point you to book in your own name on the official portal and verify the live details there before you travel.
Tirumala dress code: what to wear
TTD asks pilgrims to wear traditional, modest Indian attire for darshan. According to the official dress code page on tirumala.org:
For men: a dhoti or pyjama with an upper cloth. A simple shirt or kurta-pyjama is also commonly worn.
For women: a saree or half-saree with blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and an upper cloth (dupatta).
This dress code was first introduced for pilgrims taking part in Arjitha Sevas and has since been extended to VIP break darshan and general paid darshan pilgrims. In short, dress as you would for a temple visit: clean, traditional and modest. It is sensible to avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, ripped jeans and beachwear. Because TTD can update or tighten these rules, confirm the current dress code on the official TTD portal before you set out.
Original photo ID: the rule that catches people out
This is the single most important thing to get right. TTD requires every pilgrim to carry an original government photo ID, and the details should line up with the people travelling. At the verification counter, staff check your ticket or proceedings against your original photo identity proof.
Commonly accepted IDs include Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence or passport, with TTD urging pilgrims to carry Aadhaar where possible. Always carry the physical original card, and confirm the exact accepted ID formats on the official TTD portal, as requirements can change.
The practical takeaway: whoever is named in the booking should be present with their own original ID. Booking in one person's name and sending someone else is what most often leads to entry being refused. Since accepted ID types and verification steps can change, check the current ID requirements on the official TTD portal close to your travel date.
What to carry on darshan day
Pack light, because security is tight and many items cannot go inside. A sensible checklist:
Your darshan ticket or booking confirmation, printed if possible, as a printout is quick to show.
The original photo ID for every person named in the booking.
Any seva or accommodation confirmation you have, kept with the same set of papers.
A small amount of cash for offerings, which should be deposited only in the Hundi inside the temple.
Leave bulky bags, valuables and prohibited items at your accommodation or at the cloakroom or locker facilities near the entry points. Reaching your reporting point comfortably ahead of your slot also gives you time for the queue and verification without stress. Exact reporting times and facilities can vary, so reconfirm them on the official TTD portal.
What is not allowed inside the temple
TTD's official dos and don'ts page lists several restrictions inside and around the temple. Based on that guidance:
No footwear in or around the temple premises.
No head coverings such as helmets, caps, turbans or hats.
No weapons or ammunition anywhere in Tirumala.
Do not wear flowers, as all flowers of the sacred Seven Hills are offered to the Lord.
No non-vegetarian food, alcohol, intoxicants or smoking.
TTD also asks devotees to observe absolute silence, chant the Lord's name (Om Namo Sri Venkatesaya), wait their turn and not prostrate (sastanga danda pranamam) inside the temple. Separately, TTD appeals to pilgrims not to bring mobile phones or other electronic gadgets, so it is best to leave them behind or deposit them before you enter. The full prohibited-items list and deposit arrangements can change, so check the latest dos and don'ts on the official TTD portal before your visit.
If any of this feels confusing, you are welcome to message ONV Yatra on WhatsApp and we will help you plan your Tirumala darshan, while you book everything yourself in your own name on the official portal.
