For most devotees, the trip to Tirumala isn't complete without the Srivari laddu. That warm, fragrant ball of besan, ghee, cashew and dry fruit is more than a sweet โ it's blessed prasadam from Lord Venkateswara, and carrying it home to family is part of the whole pilgrimage.
This guide explains, in plain terms, how the laddu actually reaches your hands: the free laddu you receive after darshan, the extra laddus you can buy at the counters, and why it carries an official GI tag. Because prices and limits at TTD change from time to time, we deliberately don't quote any figures here โ we point you to the official TTD source to confirm the current details before you travel.
What makes the Srivari laddu special
The Srivari laddu is prepared by hand inside the temple complex at Tirumala, in a kitchen known as the 'Potu', and it is offered to the deity as part of temple ritual. That is what makes it prasadam rather than just a sweet.
TTD follows a fixed recipe and quality checklist called the 'dittam', which sets out the ingredients and proportions โ besan (gram flour), ghee, sugar, cashew, raisins and dry fruit โ for each laddu, and this is checked as part of daily quality control. Because of this strict, place-bound process, TTD secured a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Tirupati laddu in 2009. The GI legally protects the name, so that only laddus made at Tirumala by TTD can genuinely be called the 'Tirupati laddu'. In short: the real one comes only from the temple, never from a roadside reseller.
The free laddu you get with darshan
Every devotee who completes darshan receives laddu prasadam, and a laddu is traditionally handed out free as part of the darshan experience. You usually collect it on your way out, at the laddu distribution area, by showing your darshan ticket or token.
The exact number of free laddus per person and the way they are issued can change depending on crowd levels and TTD's current rules. So treat the free laddu as a blessing that comes with your darshan, and confirm the latest per-person allowance on the official TTD portal or by asking at the laddu counter when you arrive, rather than assuming a fixed count in advance.
Buying extra laddus at the TTD counter
Beyond the free prasadam, TTD sells additional laddus so you can take more home for family and friends. These are bought at the laddu sale counters near the temple in Tirumala, usually on showing your darshan ticket or ID.
There are different varieties โ for example a standard laddu and larger, richer laddus โ each with its own size and price, and there is usually a limit on how many extra laddus one person can buy at a time. Because these prices, sizes and limits are revised by TTD periodically, we are deliberately not quoting any figure here. Please check the current laddu price, weight and the per-person purchase limit on the official TTD portal, or read it off the board at the counter, on the day you visit. Some laddus can also be added to a seva (such as Kalyanotsavam) when you book it โ confirm what's included on the official portal.
How to get it, step by step
1. Book and complete your darshan in your own name on the official TTD portal, tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in. The laddu follows the darshan, so the darshan is what you plan first.
2. After darshan, collect your free laddu prasadam at the distribution area by showing your darshan ticket or token.
3. If you want more, go to the laddu sale counter near the temple, check the current price and limit on the display, and buy your extra laddus there.
4. Keep it fresh: the laddu is best eaten within a few days. If you're carrying it on a long journey, go by the freshness guidance given at the counter.
A gentle note for first-timers: a real Tirupati laddu is only sold by TTD inside Tirumala. If anyone offers to 'arrange' laddus for you off-site, be cautious โ that is not how the genuine prasadam works.
